Abstract
Common causes of papilledema include mass lesions, cerebral edema, hydrocephalus, shunt failure, and idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Less frequent etiologies of papilledema includes systemic disease processes and medications. Hypothyroidism is one of the rare causes of disc edema. series of female adolescent patients presented with bilateral disc edema and on investigation was diagnosed with varying levels of hypothyroidism . Total of 3 female patients of 15-20years, presented with headache, fundus examination showed bilateral disc oedema, all patients underwent systemic evaluation including BP, blood sugar levels, lipid profile, thyroid profile ,MRI and Neurophysician opinion. These patients had varying degrees of hypothyroidism and it was the causative factor for disc edema . After treatment for hypothyroidism they showed decrease in disc edema. Treating hypothyroidism is essential, as disc oedema shows complete resolution without residual visual deficit.
