Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the role of topical chloroquine (CHQ) as an adjunct to topical carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) 1% in treating mild-moderate dry eye disease (DED)

Study design: Prospective comparative study. Methods: 100 patients with symptoms of mild to moderate DED were divided into 2 groups Group 1 received topical CMC 1% 3 times/day. Group 2 received topical CHQ 0.03% twice+CMC 1% 3 times/ day for 3 months. Outcome measures-ocular surface disease index (OSDI) score, NIBUT, Tear meniscus height, ocular surface staining, any adverse effects at 3 months. Results: At 3 months, the OSDI score was significantly better in the CHQ group as compared with the CMC group (p = .002). NIBUT, Tear meniscus height, ocular surface staining were significantly better in CHQ group (p < .001). No adverse reactions seen in any group. Conclusion: Topical CHQ is a valuable adjunct to CMC in managing DED as it reduces underlying chronic inflammation & aids in preserving ocular surface stability.
