Abstract
Low-concentration atropine (LCA) is known to reduce the progression of myopia in axial myopes. The purpose of this study was to know the effect of LCA 0.05% eye drops in non responders to LCA 0.01%
All children (n=30) whose myopia increased over -0.5 dioper in a year despite using LCA 0.01% eye drops were included in the study.
Results:
The mean age in the LCA group was 6.5 ± 2.1 years (5–12 years). The glass power was increasing at a rate of -0.71 D +/-0.2 diopter per year while using LCA 0.01% eye drops. After starting LCA eye drops 0.05% the progression reduced to -0.22 +/- 0.18 D per year. One patient had receded NPA and complained of problem with near work and was given bifocals and followed. The axial length growth also slowed doen from 0.23 +/- 0.2 mm per year to -0.13 +/- 0.1 mm per year. Only 4 children still showed progression despite the usage of 0.05% LCA eye drops
Conclusion: We believe low concentration atropine 0.05% is useful in nonresponders to LCA 0.01% eye drops
