Abstract
Aim: To study the Blink Rate Patterns in patients of Computer Vision Syndrome and correlate them with their screen time.Method-Prospective comparitive observational study.Fifty patients(N=50) were asked to perform a 5 min reading on their phone at reading distance of 33 cm & their blink rates were recorded. For the next 5 min they were asked to complete a dry eye questionnaire & their blink rates being recorded again.
Result:The mean blink rates during the 5 min screen time was 11.3 blinks/min while the mean blink rates during the offscreen 5 min was 13.8 blink/min with average screen time usage per day being 6. 4 hrs.A significant positive correlation was observed between the low blink rates and increased screen time usage( p = 0.002).Conclusion–Computer users may have a blink rate that is reduced by 50% when compared with the offscreen viewing so it is adviced to voluntarily blink more when using the screen especially if the screen time usage per day is more than 2 hours per day.
