Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate learning curve of phacoemulsification on a 3-Dimensional Heads-Up Display System (3D HUD)
Methods: Prospective evaluation of initial 100 phacoemulsification cases performed using 3D HUD (Artevo 800). Outcome measures were intraoperative complications, surgeon and assistant comfort.
Results: Intraoperatively, significant decrease in surgical duration observed in last 50 cases (10.1±1.7 minutes) as compared with initial 50 cases (11.9± 2.1 minutes); p<0.001. Leaky paracentesis incision after hydration was observed in 7 eyes in initial 50 cases; none in last 50 cases (p=0.01). Surgeon did not appreciate any significant time lag. Neck strain was experienced due to angulation between viewing and operating axis. Assistant had difficulty in hand-eye coordination. Nursing staff reported difficult IOL loading. Conclusion: 3-D HUD is associated with a learning curve for surgeon as well as assistant. There is no time lag; however, modified ergonomics may induce neck strain
