Abstract

Rigid contact lens fitting is essential in long term outcomes and patient safety. Poor fitting of contact lens can cause ocular surface complications such as epithelial erosions and in severe cases, ulcer formation. Slit-lamp aided assessment of fluorescent stained corneas is usually used to assess contact lens fit. But in situations and centers where slit lamp is unavailable, we found an alternative. Using a DIY blue light imaging device a smart phone was used to assess contact lens fit using high definition videos and images. We assessed contact lens fit and corneal staining findings on follow up visits of 128 patients using our DIY device and compared it to slit lamp imaging. We found that our device was non inferior to slit lamp in assessment of contact lens fit as well as corneal staining findings on follow-up visits. Our device can hence be used in centers where slit lamp is unavailable and documented findings can be forwarded to higher centers for expert opinion and management
