Abstract

Aim: To study relationship between contrast sensitivity (CS), vision related quality of life (VR-QOL) and OCT findings after intravitreal ranibizumab injection in branch retinal vein occlusion with cystoid macular edema (BRVO-CME).

Methods: Hospital based prospective study. 20 patients with BRVO-CME treated with ranibizumab were followed up for 12 months. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), CS and OCT images were obtained pre-treatment and on 3, 6 and 12 months. For VR-QOL assessment, the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (VFQ-25) was used pre- and post-treatment.

Results: There was significant improvement in BCVA, CS and VFQ-25 composite score from baseline to 12 months follow up. There was significant correlation of improvement of CS with improvement in VFQ-25 composite score but no correlation was noted between improvement of BCVA and VFQ-25 composite score.

Conclusion: CS had a stronger association with VR-QOL than BCVA in patients with BRVO-CME.
