Abstract

Aim: To compare the visual outcome and complications of pediatric cataract surgery with and without primary posterior capsulotomy (PPC) and anterior vitrectomy

Method: 46 eyes of 26 patients who underwent cataract surgery with IOL implantation with or without PPC and anterior vitrectomy were included. Visual outcome, intra and postoperative complications were noted.

Results: Out of 46 eyes, 24 (52.17%) underwent cataract extraction with PPC and anterior vitrectomy and 22 without. There was no difference in intra or postoperative complications between the two groups. The VA in the early postoperative period was comparable between the two groups (VA > 6/12 in 79.1% in the first group vs 72.7% in the second group). 17 out of 22 (77.2%) patients developed PCO at the end of 1 year with reduction in VA.

Conclusion: PPC and anterior vitrectomy is a safe, effective procedure in children undergoing cataract surgery. This procedure is beneficial in optimizing pediatric cataract management.
