Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the actual prevalence of dry eye disease in patients from different age group, sex, profession and surgical history having the symptoms of dry eye.
Method: 198 eyes of 99 patients (55 females and 44 males) with symptoms of dryness, redness or itching were observed in a cross sectional study. Patients were included from different age groups, gender, profession and history of cataract or LASIK surgery. Schirmer test, TBUT and OSDI were performed to diagnose the condition.
Result: 24% of the total patients (mean age 46+/- 2.6 years) were having dry eye disease. Dry eye was more common in indoor workers (43%) and those with more screen time (51%). Increasing age, female gender and those with ocular surgery history were more predisposed.
Conclusion: Dry eye disease is often overlooked and under looked as well. It can be diagnosed earlier and further complications can be prevented with good diagnostic practices.
