Abstract

Aim: To report a of case of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) as a rare presentation of Moya-moya disease (MMD)

Methods: Case report

Result: Middle aged Indian woman came with complaints of sudden diminution of vision in left eye for 2 days. She was noted to have RAPD in left eye. Fundus exam revealed pale retina with cherry red spot. On OCT, hyper-reflectivity of inner retinal layers seen confirming the diagnosis of CRAO. After emergency ocular management she was referred for thorough cardiac workup and serum homocysteine levels. She was diagnosed to have Moya-moya disease.

Conclusion: Moya- moya disease is a rare condition in which arteries in the brain undergo progressive, stenotic changes. There’s development of collateral circulation around the block vessel but the vessels are often week and prone to bleeding, aneurysm and thrombosis.

CRAO with MMD is a rare occurence. We present a case scenario where CRAO was seen as presenting feature and also led to the diagnosis of MMD.
