Abstract
Purpose: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) is characterized by irregular fibrillar extracellular substance deposition in the anterior segment and orbital vasculature. This study aims to evaluate orbital blood flow (OBF) velocities using Colour Doppler imaging in Central Retinal Artery (CRA), Ophthalmic Artery (OA), and Short Posterior Ciliary Artery (SPCA) in PEX.
Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study. Colour doppler imaging (CDI) was done in 52 patients with bilateral PEX.
Results: OBF velocities are deranged with a decrease in peak systolic velocity, end-diastolic velocity and an increase in resistive index (RI) in PEX. Reduction of PSV and EDV for all arteries in each eye was statistically significant. RI, though elevated, was not of statistical significance.
Conclusion: There is a reduction in PSV and EDV indices with a rise in RI in patients with PEX. Assessment of blood flow parameters by CDI in PEX may aid in the detection of early glaucomatous changes.
