Abstract

AIM: To assess postoperative results of paediatric cataract surgery with primary posterior capsulotomy (PPC) and anterior vitrectomy using intra-operative triamcinolone acetonide (TA).

METHOD: A prospective, case-control study was done in 30 children undergoing phacoaspiration in tertiary eye centre from June 2021 to May 2022. 15 eyes underwent PPC using intracameral TA in group A and 15 eyes without TA in group B. Post-operative intraocular pressure (IOP), pigment deposits and posterior capsule opacification (PCO) were noted.

RESULT: Out of 30 cases (1-10 years) 18 were males and 12 females. Mean post-operative IOP did not change in 6 month follow-up. In group A, 15 eyes were quiet at 2 weeks. In group B 5 eyes had cells of 1+. 2 eyes of group A and 8 eyes of group B had IOL pigment deposits. 4 eyes in group B showed PCO at 3 months while none in group A.

CONCLUSION: Intra-operative use of TA causes less post-operative AC inflammation and pigment deposits on IOL optic.
