Abstract
Aim: To study the characteristics of lamina cribrosa by OCT in patients with Non arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy(NAION) and compared with healthy controls. Design: Retrospective observational study. Materials and Methods: Data of 20 patients presenting with NA AION were taken from hospital record. Clinical profile including visual acuity, colour vision, central fields, pupils, fundus at presentation and follow up were analysed. The Lamina cribrosa thickness(LCT) by OCT was analysed between NA AION patients and healthy subjects. Results: Average LCT was decreased in NA AION patients compared to controls(p=0.003). Decrease in LCT was most pronounced in patients with bilateral NAION compared to controls(p=0.0264). Conclusion: The decreased LCT in NAION may reflect less anatomic space for the affected eye to swell from ischemic insult. Lamina cribrosa may play an underlying role in pathophysiology of NAION as it may influence the underlying anatomy of the optic nerve head.
