Abstract

Purpose: To analyze the usefulness of topical anesthesia in rectus muscle surgery in strabismus

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of data from patients who underwent rectus muscle surgery under topical anesthesia.Results:28 patients were included in this study with ages ranging from 12 to76 years with a mean age of 22.96 years. 19 patients were males & 10 were females. Most of the patients were with either intermittent or constant exotropia. out of 28 patients, 18 underwent unilateral surgery with single or two muscle surgery and 10 patients underwent bilateral surgery with single or two muscles in either eye. all patients were well tolerated for the procedure and none of them have any complications during surgery. The average duration of surgery was 30.38 min.Conclusion: Topical anesthesia is a useful alternative to local/general anesthesia. We can adjust our surgical dosage during the procedure. For experienced surgeons, total time is comparable with general anesthesia.
