Abstract
Purpose: This study describes the clinical spectrum and surgical management of corneal keloids in children less than 14 years of age. Methods: The clinical information of patients with corneal keloids between 2008 and 2022 was retrospectively reviewed. Results: Of the 22 eyes with keloids, congenital (7), primary (6), and secondary (9). Systemic associations: Rubin Stein Tayebi syndrome (3), Lowes syndrome (1), & Ehlers Danlos syndrome (1). Twenty-two eyes of 18 patients underwent deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (14), penetrating keratoplasty (7), or superficial keratectomy with Mitomycin C (1), at a median age of 0.8 (IQR, 0.16 to1.01) yrs. At a median post-interventional follow-up of 2.2 years (IQR, 0.55-4.2), 86 % of eyes maintained a clear graft. Conclusions: Surgical excision of corneal keloid combined with partial or full thickness corneal replacement is a safe and effective surgical strategy.
