Abstract

A retrospective interventional case series to assess the efficacy of 25G Chandelier-assisted external drainage of subretinal fluid (SRF) for globe salvage in Stage 3B and Stage 4 Coats’ disease. A total of 11 eyes of Stage 3B (9) and Stage 4 (2) Coats’ disease were included. Mean age of presentation was 3 ± 1.95 years. There were 9 males. Mean follow up following surgery was 9 ± 2.54 months. Nine (81.82%) eyes had complete resolution of SRF, one (9.09%) had partial resolution and about one (9.09%) had persistent SRF after the procedure. Additional procedures like epiretinal membrane removal, laser photocoagulation and cryotherapy were needed in four (36.37%) eyes during follow up. No eye required enucleation and 100% globe salvage could be achieved. Complications included lens touch in one eye and vitreous fibrosis in one eye. Chandelier-assisted external drainage appears to be safe and effective in preventing progression of disease in eyes with advanced Coats’ disease.
