Abstract

Purpose:To analyse the clinical presentation and response to treatment of paediatric orbital

inflammatory disease.Methods:A retrospective review of biopsy-proven orbital inflammatory

lesions in patients upto 15 years.Results:.The duration of symptoms ranged from 0.5-15 weeks, included Impaired vision(16.7%), pain(33.3%) watering(8.3%), ptosis(33.3%),periorbital mass(65.2%), redness(50.0%), proptosis(47.8%), globe displacement(17.4%), and diplopia(39.1%). Most of the

patients underwent anterior orbitotomy for biopsy. While a large proportion

showed non-specific inflammation of the orbit, there was 1 case of idiopathic sclerosing

inflammation and another of histiocytic inflammation. 47.8% had oral prednisolone,28.3%

received NSAIDS,69.7% had antibiotics and 8.3% underwent

radiotherapy.10 patients had recurrance. Conclusions:Paediatric orbital inflammatory disease

shares similar clinical characteristics with the adult form, but deserves further

study as a disease entity of its own.
