Abstract

Aim:To evaluate incidence,risk of B/L acute cataract in newly diagnosed T1DM &visual outcome post cataract surgery

Method:A retrospective study done from May2021-April2022.Newly diagnosed T1DM pt(admitted in paediatrics and Medicine dept)followed up.Demographic data,HbA1c &B.sugar level,presenting complaints &status at admission collected &potential risk determined &post cataract Sx visual status seen.

Result:Out of 25pt(16M/9F), 15 pt(9M/6F) had B/L acute cataract,HBA1c &B.sugar level between 14.3%-20.7% &330mg/l-610mg/l respectively.All had H/o of polydipsia,polyuria at presentation &5 pts(3M/2F) had ketoacidosis at admission.Both eye cataract Sx done in early possible time.Out of 30 eyes,27 had VA 6/18/above,3 had 6/60 or below.Post op fundus were normal in all pts.

Conclusion:In T1DM,B/L acute cataract forms within 3-4 months with high Incidence in pts presented with severe T1DM.VA post cataract Sx are good with normal fundus.Both eye must be evaluated for cataract formation.
