Abstract

Retinoscopy, despite excellent literature &animated videos, learning this art is a challenge as there is no live demo of the retinoscopic reflex of patient’s eye by the mentor hence requires intensive instruction. We describe a frugal technique of retinoscopy – Gimbalscope- where we attach the retinoscope to the smartphone camera with the help of adaptors for simultaneous viewing and recording retinoscopic reflexes. Retinoscopic reflexes were elucidated and recorded from 40 eyes of 20 patients including eight eyes of four pediatric patients.Our study is of immense benefit to beginners as they could understand,observe it along with the mentor in real time as well as use the recorded videos in identifying and appreciating abnormal and subtle retinoscopic reflexes later.it is convenient, inexpensive tool to assist the teaching of medical students. Ophthalmologists-optometrists in primary/secondary setups can easily utilize our apparatus as a teaching tool. Feedback stats was obtained.
