Abstract
METHODOLOGY: 110 patients with cataract, who met the eligibility criteria, were recruited for the study. Slit lamp photographs of the cataracts were taken and compared with reference photographs for categorization. Radial scans of the anterior segment of the eye to be operated were taken using AS-OCT and used to measure the anterior lens capsule and epithelial complex(ALCEC) thickness. Details of intra-operative events like performance of capsulotomy and occurrence of posterior capsular rupture were obtained.
RESULTS: The central ALCEC thickness(32.85+/-5.15 µm) in mature cataracts was found to be lesser(p = 0.023) than nucleosclerotic cataracts(36.77+/-4.38 µm). There was a weak negative correlation(τb = -0.199) with central ALCEC thickness and category of cataracts indicating possible thinner capsules in advanced cataract. Relationship between capsular thickness and the intra-operative events could not be evaluated due to inadequate sample size due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
