Abstract
Aim- AD is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder of the elderly. Recent studies have attributed these symptoms to optic nerve degeneration and loss of RGCs. Thus, this study was conducted to evaluate RNFL thickness in patients of AD using SD-OCT.
Methods – A total of 32 patients of AD, meeting the inclusion criteria and a control group of 32 patients visiting the OPD for routine check-up, were examined in a cross-sectional prospective study. Detailed ocular examination of the patients, including BCVA, fundus examination, AT and CCT were done followed by measurement of peripapillary RNFL thickness by OCT scanning.
Results-The average RNFL thickness in AD patients was found to be 109.8±6.98µm while it was 115.78±8.42µm in the control group. The average RNFL thickness in AD patients was found to be significantly less than in controls(p<.01) Conclusion-RNFL measurement by OCT can be used an early tool in aiding the diagnosis and monitoring the progression of AD.
