Abstract

Introduction: Maternal infection of rubella virus during pregnancy can cause cataract in fetus. Rubella is also known cause of Fuchs uveitis syndrome.

Discussion: A 41 year old female presented with complaints of diminution of vision in OS since 2 years. On examination OD BCVA was 6/6, OS BCVA was 6/9P. Anterior segment showed blue dot cataract and posterior subcapsular cataract in OS and blue dot cataract in OD. OS also showed diffuse stellate keratic precipitates, iris atrophy and occasional cells. Posterior segment OU was normal. Blood investigation were normal. Rubella IgG was ordered and was found to be positive. She was started on NSAIDs & lubricants. After 4 months she reviewed for cataract surgery. She underwent cataract surgery under steroid cover, which was uneventful. Post operative BCVA was 6/6.

Conclusion: In our patient cataract was caused by both rubella infection & Fuchs uveitis. Formation of cataract at such a late age due to maternal rubella infection is very rare.
