Abstract
The goal was to study effect of surgical-simulator training on surgical outcome of residents who performed phacoemulsification. It was retrospective, comparative observational study. We made two groups Group A without prior wet-laboratory training & Group B consisted of cases performed by residents with adequate skill training on goat eyes and simulator. Records were reviewed for intraoperative and postoperative complications, need for trainer takeover, additional procedures and final visual outcome. We enrolled 227 cases, 126 in group A and 101 in B. There was significant difference in average time taken to complete the surgery in Group A(60.23 ± 8.3 minutes) and Group B(49.7 ± 14.38 minutes) p=0.001).Major complications, including posterior capsular tear and zonular dialysis, were higher in Group A than Group B (10.3% vs 8.5%). A structured wet lab training curriculum can make a significant difference in learning experience of resident trainees and enable better surgical outcomes.
