Abstract
Introduction: Cataract development/progression is a major complication after pars plana vitrectomy. Most cataracts develop after weeks of PPV. However cataract development within few days of PPV may be because of surgical trauma to posterior lens capsule.
Purpose: To report a case of cataract within 15 hours of PPV.
Case report: A 21 yr old male was operated on left eye for traumatic retinal detachment. Lens was clear before surgery. PPV with silicone oil tamponade was done. There was no evidence of posterior capsule trauma at conclusion of surgery.
On post-operative check-up next day, retina was attached under oil. Lens showed evidence of rossete shaped cataract within 15 hours of PPV.
Discussion: Cataract development has been reported as early as 1 day following vitrectomy. However this is extremely rare and usually occurs as a result of surgical trauma to lens capsule. In present case, we report acute onset (within 15 hours) of rosette cataract without surgical injury to capsule.
