Abstract
Aim
To describe the ultrasound biomicroscopy findings of normal eyelids.
Method
20 subjects (40 eyelids) of different age groups, without any eyelid abnormality were taken and BE UBM was done using 50 mHz probe placed on the eyelid with eyes closed in supine position. Thickness of eyelids, tarsus, orbicularis oculi and levator-muller-orbital septum-conjunctival (LMSC) complex was measured in primary gaze.
Results
Skin, subcutaneous tissue, LMSC complex appeared echodense and orbicularis oculi & tarsus appeared echolucent. Mean thickness of eyelid, tarsus, orbicularis oculi and LMSC was 1.65±0.30mm, 0.72±1.02mm, 0.31±0.03mm, 0.64±0.15mm respectively. The thickness of these structures was found to be more in males than females.
Conclusion
UBM can be used as a non invasive imaging tool for visualising eyelid anatomy and can be used to highlight the differences in anatomy in various eyelid abnormalities. It has a potential for use in preoperative assessment & planning of eyelid surgeries.
