Abstract
A retrospective analysis was done to see the functional and cosmetic outcome of patients treated by laissez faire technique for lower Lid defects where primary closure would not have been possible . Skin defects following excision of large lid tumour in 41pts. was allowed to heal by granulation tissue. All patients had tumour sizes of more than 12-16 mm involving lower lid margin.The size of defects, time taken,discomfort during healing, functional and cosmetic results were analysed at end of 6 months. A good functional and cosmetic results was obtained in 39 out of 41 pts. Size of defect was Length-21.25 ±3.9mm, Width-5.64 ±2.8mm , Outer canthal was involved in 06 pt., medial canthal with canalicular was involve in 03pt. mean age was 64+ 6.54 , male/female 29/12. 03 patients had watering with foreign body sensation. Healing by secondary intention of large defects following excision of lower lid tumour is an effective alternative to excision with conventional lid reconstruction.
