Abstract
Aim: To evaluate whether abnormalities detected on Brain MRI correlate with ocular abnormalities and visual outcomes including functional vision in children with global developmental delay. Method: Prospective cross-sectional observational study of 87 children with GDD
Results: Mean age at examination was 2.89 (±4.41) with male: female ratio of 58:29. Of the 87 children with GDD, 69 had an MRI. MRI findings include: Normal MRI 7/69 (10%), Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) 41/69 (59%) and structural changes 21/69 (30%). Children with MRI changes were more likely to have CVI(p=0.03) and Nystagmus (p=0.001). Detection of MRI changes showed no association with strabismus, optic disc changes and functional vision parameters (p>0.05)
Conclusion: Our study reveals that presence of Brain MRI abnormalities were associated with an higher chances of occurrence of CVI and nystagmus in children with GDD
