Abstract
A study to describe the demographic profile, clinical presentation and management outcomes in patients with lacrimal drainage diseases due to Sphingomonas paucimobilis. Out of a total of 11 patients who had shown growth of Sphingomonas paucimobilis, 5 had developed canaliculitis and 6 had lacrimal abscess. Among the canaliculitis group, after punctal dilation with non incisional curettage, 2 patients had recurrence of which one was treated with a 3 snip punctoplasty and in the other a repeat non incisional curettage was done which lead to resolution of symptoms. Of the 6 patients with complications of acute dacryocystitis 4 had a lacrimal abscess, 2 had orbital cellulitis and one had an associated lacrimal fistula. Microbiological work up showed similar sensitivity profile. Spingomonas paucimobilis causes severe infections in the lacrimal drainage system with more chance of recurrences hence needs an aggressive approach for appropriate management.
