Abstract
PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy of SMH displacement using subretinal rTPA and air versus subretinal BSS and air
METHODS: In this ambispective, non- randomised study, 21 patients with large SMH (>4DD) secondary to various causes and presenting within 2 weeks of symptom onset were included. Group A (10 eyes) underwent PPV with subretinal rTPA & air whereas Group B (11 eyes) underwent PPV with subretinal BSS & air. This was followed by partial FAX and SF6 (20%) tamponade with post op heads up positioning. Primary outcome was degree of displacement at 1 month & secondary outcome was change in BCVA at 3 months
RESULTS: The mean age was 62.8 ± 15.4 yrs (11 males;10 females). Complete displacement was seen in 9/10 (90%) eyes in Group A and 9/11 (81.81%) eyes in Group B at 1 month (p=1.00). BCVA improved significantly from baseline in both groups at 1 & 3 months and was comparable (p= 0.37)
CONCLUSION: PPV with subretinal BSS is effective in displacing large SMHs and is comparable to rTPA
