Abstract
Aim-To describe clinicopathological profile and management outcomes of primary orbital malignant Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT)
Methods-Records of 7 patients diagnosed with malignant SFT over 10 years were analyzed. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) confirmed the diagnosis in all.
Results-Mean age of the study population was 45.6±15.3 years with male preponderance. The most common presenting feature was proptosis (n=5). All patients underwent excisional biopsy. Histopathology showed capsular invasion in 5 patients. IHC revealed diffuse STAT 6 and CD34 positivity. Median follow up was 14 months. Recurrence was seen in 5 patients. Out of 5, 2 patients with regional metastasis underwent lid-sparing exenteration, 2 were treated with excision biopsy. Postoperatively 2 patients received adjuvant radiotherapy (60Gy).
Conclusion-Malignant SFTs are rare, slow growing spindle cell tumours. Capsular invasion is associated with a high risk of recurrence. A periodic examination is warranted in these cases.
