Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate 10 superior oblique palsy(SOP) cases for demography,preoperative parameters,surgical technique & postoperative outcome. To discuss each case in terms of uniqueness in presentation &surgical approach

Method- Retrospective analysis of 10 cases of SOP operated over 2 years at a tertiary eye care centre.

Result- Age range 7-27 years. Male:female=1:1. Laterality- 50% unilateral , 50% bilateral. Coexisting horizontal deviation in 90%. Esotropia (ET) in 40%, exotropia(XT) in 50%. Preoperative mean vertical deviation 15PD and mean horizontal deviation 50 PD XT and 20 PD ET. Surgical approach- 50% underwent IO recession, 20% underwent ATIO, 30% underwent ANTIO along with horizontal muscle surgery. Postoperative successful vertical deviation corrected within 10 PD in 100%, horizontal deviation corrected within 10 PD in 80%;1 patient each had residual ET and XT

Conclusion- Horizontal deviations occur in SOP cases frequently and maybe the cause of residual deviation
