Abstract
Introduction: The most common systemic cause of dry eye disease, diabetes mellitus is leading. The prevalence ranges from 15-33%.Tear hyperosmolarity , instability caused by LFU & ocular surface dysfunction are relevant.
Aim:To estimate the prevalence of Dry Eye Disease in patients of Type 2 DM diagnosed atleast 5 years prior, in a Cross- Sectional Observational Study.
Method: 350 patients with T2DM who attended Ophthalmology OPD at a tertiary care hospital were randomly selected and included after seeking proper informed consent. The tear film stability assessed by TBUT, tear secretion assessed by conducting the Schirmer’s Test (I & II).
Result: Schirmer’s I was abnormal in 185 of the subjects, Schirmer’s II abnormal in 166 of the subjects & TBUT in 170 subjects.
Conclusion:This study found that a fairly high proportion of patients with T2DM had clinical evidence of Dry Eye disease, more noticeable in those with longer duration of Diabetes, which was significant (p<0.05).
