Abstract

Two cases of aggressive retinopathy of prematurity (AROP) with unusual associated features. Baby 1 – born at GA 30+4 weeks, birth weight 1.36kg, developed AROP and received intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) at PMA 37+2 weeks. At 41+4 weeks PMA with regressing AROP lipemia retinalis grade 3 noted. Systemic evaluation – serum triglycerides of 1500mg% with no syndromic associations. Mother was advised low fat diet and baby weaned to skimmed milk. At 1 month fundus changes reversed and lipid profile normalized. Baby 2- Born at 33+6 weeks, birth weight 1.3kgs, was treated with oxygen supplement and for anemia, developed AROP with multiple retinal hemorrhages suggestive of pseudo-vasculitis. Received IVB at PMA 37+2 weeks. The occluded vessels recanalized following IVB, with regression of AROP and pseudo-vasculitis. AROP is a medical emergency that requires prompt treatment and can be associated with unusual retinal findings. Timely intervention and thorough evaluation can give good outcomes.
