Abstract
90 patients with regular astigmatism of range 0.75 D to 4 D were included in the
study. Exclusion criteria included irregular corneal astigmatism, post refractive
surgery, corneal dystrophies, problems encountered during surgery. Cataract
surgery in all patients was done by phacoemulsification by the same surgeon using
Alcon AcrySof Toric IOLs. The postoperative position of the lens was assessed at 1
week, 1 month and 6 months, using a toric marker with patient on the slit lamp.
There was no significant rotation of IOL observed during followup. Overall, the post
op rotation was within 5 degrees in 95% of cases. Both clockwise and anti clockwise
rotation was recorded, with no obvious preference for either. However, IOL rotation
happened mostly within 1st month of surgery. Conclusion: Toric IOLs are very
effective and consistent in correcting astigmatism during the cataract surgery and
once they are in position, they demonstrate good rotational stability in the capsular
bag.
