Abstract

AIM- To know the status of patients post exenteration after orbital mucormycosis. METHODS- 47 patients who underwent exenteration following mucormycosis were followed up for a period of 12 months. All underwent Hamilton depression score test for depression & social anxiety appearance test. Cause of death was noted & analyzed. RESULTS- 42 (89%) succumbed within 1 month of exenteration surgery. The most common cause being CNS extension of mucormyosis (29) & second being unrelated medical conditions (13). Among 6 who survived 2 developed moderate depression & 4 developed severe depression. All 8 had severe social anxiety. CONCLUSION-The second wave created havoc & many developed mucormycosis for which destructive procedures like exentertion were done. Along with high mortality following the surgery, post surgical depression & anxiety levels are very high & need to be tackled at the earliest to prevent suicidal tendencies.
