Abstract

Low vision affects >246 million people worldwide and over 54.5 million in India.For visually impaired the opportunities to continue mainstream education/ employment are severely restricted and alternative modes of

rehabilitation like braille become difficult to adopt.Low vision aids (LVAs) can be a tool to improve the quality of life. The primary aim of this innovative device is to provide easier means to read than the contemporaries available with better understanding of the difficulty faced. UREAD is an advanced book reader for the visually impaired.This is a robust,stand alone, desktop model which gives the user speech experience using naturally sounding voices.It converts the text image into voice module and presents the user with speech experience .It supports all Indian regional languages.This device aids in mainstream education and also promotes non -academic modalities of reading in visually impaired.
