Abstract

PURPOSE: To evaluate knowledge, attitude and practice of Indian mothers towards occlusion therapy in children with strabismic Amblyopia.

METHODS: 45 mothers of children aged 1yr to 15yrs of age diagnosed with strabismic amblyopia were evaluated by questionnaire method in retrospective cross sectional pattern. They were evaluated based on their awareness about amblyopia and compliance to occlusion therapy.

RESULTS: 20 out of 45 mothers (44%) were prompt in detection of eye deviation and appropriate treatment. 15 of them (33%) believed Amblyopia was visually distressing to the child and 22% believed occlusion therapy helped retain vision. Only 27% mothers were compliant with occlusion therapy for their children.

CONCLUSION: The awareness related to occlusion therapy is severely lacking among Indian parents. There is an urgent need for proper counseling and guidance among mothers regarding amblyopia.
