Abstract

Aim: To study the visual outcomes and complications of cataract surgery in patients with leprosy.

Methods: Patients with leprosy having cataract were recruited prospectively from January 2021 till June 2022. All patients declared cured were included excluding cases with corneal and retinal pathologies. SICS with PCIOL implantation was done after full evaluation. We recorded visual acuity as good (6/6-6/18), borderline (6/18-6/60) and poor (<6/60). Postoperative follow up was done on day 1 and 1, 4 & 12 weeks. Results: We recruited 117 eyes of 98 patients. PCT with vitreous loss (2.56%), striate keratopathy (11.96%) and chronic anterior uveitis (3.41%) were the commonest intraoperative, early and late postoperative complications respectively. Visual acuity was poor in 82 eyes and good in 6 eyes before surgery. At discharge; it was good in 80 eyes and poor in 16 eyes (OR 68.33, 95% CI 6.8 – 1626.5). Conclusion: Visual outcome achieved were good and comparable to published literature.
