Abstract

Introduction: Childhood cataract is a treatable cause of visual handicap in children. This study proposed to retrospectively review the outcomes of unilateral pediatric cataracts.

Methods: Medical records of 78 patients aged between 10 months to 10 years with unilateral congenital, developmental and traumatic cataract who underwent phacoemulsification with primary intraocular lens implantation from 2013 to 2021 were reviewed retrospectively.

Results: Average VA improved from 2.16 log MAR before the surgery to 1.09 log MAR. The mean refraction differed from the goal by only +0.16 diopter. The mean post-op VA in congenital, developmental and traumatic cataract were 1.22, 1.32 and 0.77 log MAR respectively. 66.66% traumatic cataracts, 31.25% congenital cataracts and 18.18% developmental cataracts gained good visual acuity (≥ 0.47 log MAR).

Conclusions: The study suggests that primary IOL implantation is safe in children over the age of 10 months, in unilateral pediatric cataracts.
