Abstract

Introduction:

We present a rare case of bilateral lens matter deposition behind intact posterior capsule (PC) in a case of Retinitis Pigmentosa(RP),a retinal degenerative disease.

Patient and Clinical Findings:

A 68 year old female operated for cataract 13 years back in both eyes was referred for Nd:YAG LASER posterior capsulotomy with vision of hand movement. However on slit lamp examination we found lens material behind the intact PC in both eyes. Posterior segment examination showed chorioretinal degeneration typical of RP. Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography(AS-OCT) confirmed cortex behind the PC.

Since zonules are likely to be weak in RP, we postulate that cortical particles could have passed through the zonules during cataract surgery and later to accumulated in the hyaloid fossa mimicking a posterior capsular opacity. The case was managed by performing pars plana vitrectomy with cortical material removal and vision was improved to 6/12 on Snellen’s chart.
