Abstract

Medical records of patients with intracranial meningiomas were reviewed retrospectively for 2 years. Ocular signs & symptoms, types of intracranial meningiomas & duration of symptoms were evaluated. A total of 51 patients included 44 females (mean age 52.25y) and 7 males (mean age 44.5y)

96% patients had visual field defects, 88% had optic disc atrophy, 8% had optic disc oedema, 11% had other cranial nerve involvement. Visual acuity ranged from 6/6 to no light perception. The duration of symptoms ranged from 15d-2y.

Types of meningiomas included 18 suprasellar,6 planum sphenoidale,4 frontal,10 sphenoid wing,2 clinoidal,4 orbital apex,1 olfactory groove,2 optic nerve sheath,1 clival, 1 tentorial,1 occipital & 1 with multiple meningiomas.

Ocular manifestations vary based on sites of the meningiomas & visual loss is often severe. Detailed ophthalmic evaluation, appropriate neuroimaging, early diagnosis and immediate referral to the neurosurgeon can prevent irreversible complications.
