Abstract

PURPOSE: To study the long-term visual outcome in infants undergoing primary intraocular lens implantation(IOL)

DESIGN: Retrospective study

METHODS: Records of infants who underwent primary IOL implantation were evaluated for visual outcome. The main outcome measures were myopic shift, increase in intraocular pressure and the need of additional surgeries

RESULTS: Forty-three infants (73 eyes) with a mean age of 6.25 months were evaluated. The mean follow-up was 64.4 months. The average myopic shift was 5.9 DS. Average increase in intraocular pressure was 3.14 mm of Hg. Indications of additional surgery included visual axis opacification, pupillary membrane, IOL decentration. Visual outcome parameters were not significantly different among infants operated before 6 months of age(P =. 452)

CONCLUSION: At a follow up of 5 years, infants who underwent primary IOL implantation showed a myopic shift of 5.9 DS but incidence of glaucoma and need for additional surgeries was low
