Abstract
This retrospective study compared the high-risk histopathological features in primary (Group 1) and secondary (Group 2) enucleated eyes of retinoblastoma patients. 137 eyes were included in the study, 64 (46.7%) were primarily enucleated eyes and 73 (53.2%) were enucleated after being subjected to systemic chemotherapy. Histopathological high-risk factors (retro-laminar and cut end of optic nerve involvement, massive choroidal infiltration by tumor cells, scleral involvement, anterior segment including iris and ciliary body involvement) are evaluated.
When comparing high-risk histopathological features in both the groups, only retro-laminar optic nerve involvement is more in Group 1 (21 vs. 12), whereas optic nerve cut end involvement (0 vs. 6), massive choroidal tumor infiltration (14 vs. 17), scleral involvement (8 vs. 11), and anterior segment including iris and ciliary body involvement (5 vs. 15) are more in secondarily enucleated eyes compared to primarily enucleated eyes.
