Abstract
Immediately sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS) is a controversial topic in ophthalmic world. Exponential increase in world population and average lifespan has translated into increasing geriatric population with cataract and increasing backlog of surgeries. ISBCS needs to be incorporated in ophthalmic practice. Potential risk of bilateral infection/endophthalmitis has been a deterrent to its acceptance. Faster visual recovery, economic benefits to patients and health care providers, lesser risk of amblyopia in paediatric population and decreased risk of complications associated with general anaesthesia outweigh disadvantages of ISBCS compared to delayed bilateral cataract surgery’ (DBCS). ISBCS is preferred over DBCS in paediatric population, uncooperative, mentally and physically disabled adults needing general anaesthesia. This case highlights successful ISBCS in 37 years old female patient with Down’s syndrome.
