Abstract
Aim: To compare the prevalence of dry eye disease and to assess corneal nerve sensitivity in diabetics in comparison to non-diabetics.
Methodology: A 1 year cross sectional study, in which 400 patients divided into 2 groups- 200 diabetic and 200 non-diabetic were examined. Symptoms of Dry eye disease were assessed using SPEED questionnaire and tear film evaluation was done using Schirmer’s II test and TBUT. Corneal nerve sensitivity was tested using cotton wisp.
Results: According to speed score, the prevalence of dry eye in Diabetic group is 66.5% and in non-diabetic group is 32%. According to Schirmer’s test result, the prevalence of dry eye in Diabetic group is 70.5% and in non-diabetic group is 34%. According to TBUT result, the prevalence of dry eye in Diabetic group is 50.5% and in non-diabetic group is 13.75%.
Discussion: A strong association exists between diabetes and the prevalence and severity of dry eyes. Dry eye disease also has a role in reduced corneal sensations.
