Abstract

Purpose: To study various baseline factors contributing to ocular surface damages after uneventful cataract surgery, to plan for rational surface protector use

Methods: Non-randomized, double-masked comparative trial. Cataracts with & without DM based on age were grouped as G-1(No DM,<60;N=43),G-2(DM <60;N=39), G-3(No DM >60;N=51),G-4(DM >60 yrs;N=67). Preop Meibography, noninvasive tear break-up time (NIBUT), blink-rate were analyzed & compared with POD-21, 3mon. Ocular Protection Index(OPI) calculated by dividing NIBUT by blink interval. OPI<1 is unfavourable Results: ANOVA for OPI had time effect, Wilk’sLambda=0.813, p<0.0001. Preop OPI was 1.88, 1.26, 1.67, 0.88 across Gr1-4, reduced to 1.68, 0.91, 1.03, 0.75 at POD21, restored by 3-mon. Gr-4 had poor OPI at all times. DM had 12.1% MG loss Vs non-DM 6.64%. Elderly, DM were 6.29 & 1.79 times more susceptible for OSD Conclusion: Elderly age & DM influence post-cataract OSD. Diabetics over 60yrs require long-term surface protectors
