Abstract
In this ongoing study, histopathological examination of all excised specimens of clinically presumed pterygium was done. The tissue specimens routinely submitted for HPE were processed into paraffin blocks and slides made from blocks were stained with routine Haemotoxylin and Eosin and studied under light microscopy by an ophthalmic pathologist. Grades of intraepithelial dysplasia were analysed in slides showing dysplastic changes. Out of 200 specimens, 2% showed dysplastic change, of which 50% showed mild dysplasia, 25% moderate and 25% severe, with co-existing elastotic degeneration. Those showing dysplastic changes were followed up closely and given adjuvant therapy for OSSN as required. Due to overlap of certain clinical features, a suspicion of subclinical OSSN should always be kept in mind and clinical evaluation along with Rose Bengal staining, and HPE of surgically excised pterygium to rule out OSSN can be included in the routine evaluation of pterygium patients.
