Abstract

AIM-To assess the incidence of intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation on postoperative day 1 after cataract surgery performed by resident surgeons compared with attending surgeons. METHODS- a study on 1370 cataract extractions by MSICS over a period of 12 months. Pre operative and post operative IOP was measured along with associated variables. RESULT- Resident-performed cataract surgery was associated with statistically significant higher rates of IOP elevation in all categories and in all clinical situations known to be associated. CONCLUSION- The incidence of postoperative day 1 IOP elevation after MSICS performed by resident surgeons was higher than that of experienced attending surgeons. Variables including vitreous loss during surgery, prior ocular trauma, preexisting glaucoma, glaucoma suspect status, and male sex were significant contributors. Prophylactic IOP lowering should be considered in high-risk patients.
