Abstract
PURPOSE: To compare efficacy and safety profile of topical 5FU & IFN α2b in treatment of OSSN.
METHODS: It is a cross sectional study conducted at tertiary eye care center including 40 patients. 1% topical 5-FU administered four times daily for 2 weeks and off for 2 weeks.1MIu/ml IFN-alpha 2b was administered four times daily without drug holiday.
RESULTS: Maximum number of patients were male. Resolution rates in both the group was high. 80% in 5FU group and 90% in IFN group with minimal side effects in 5FU group. Papillary variety responded better with topical 1% 5FU application.
Gelatinous and leukoplakic variety of OSSN responded better to topical IFN α2b.
CONCLUSION: Topical 1% 5FU and topical IFN α2b 1MIU/ml were effective
treatment modalities for OSSN with high frequency of resolution and low recurrence rates in both
groups with no significant side effects. Topical IFN α2b showed faster resolution than topical 1% 5FU in our study.
