Abstract

Aim:To evaluate the results of mini scleral contact lenses in keratoconus patients. Method: Retrospective review of 97 eyes which were fitted with mini SCL’s (McAsfeer) and had a minimum follow up of 6 months.Visual acuity, comfort, mean wear-time, final lens parameters, number of trial lenses and adverse events were noted. Comfort was assessed through a structured questionnaire. Result: Mean age was 22.5±5.4 yrs.Mean logMAR VA improved significantly from 0.47 ± 0.35 (range: 0-1.6) with habitual correction to 0.08 ± 0.12 with mini SCLs (P= 0.01). VA of log MAR 0.2 or better was noted in 90 eyes (93.7%). Mean wear time was 9.2±2.8 hours. Patient comfort was noted to be 88% with an average score of 7.8/10. Sim-Kmin and Sim-Kmax were not significantly correlated with the sagittal depth of the final lenses (r2=0.015 p=0.883 ;r2 =0.077, p= 0.458). Conclusion: Mini SCL’s are an effective option for the visual rehabilitation of keratoconus patients both in terms of visual acuity and comfort.
